Perfect Blend – Spicy Beginnings

Introducing Garam Masala – Spice Blend in Collaboration with Curio Spice Co.

As a child when I’d come home from boarding school during the summer, the large courtyard in our family home would be abuzz with smells and sounds of preserving, rolling and pounding, inducing many sneezes as we darted through playing tag.

The Indian summer spans through April & May, and in the intense heat on the Northern plains, my grandmother, mother, aunts and sisters would prepare spices, pickles and papadums for the entire year. Red chilies would stretch across yards of muslin in abandon, and the yellow stains from haldi, (turmeric) on the large wooden pestle would leave an imprint of the simmering heat and home as I headed back to school as the country cooled off with the start of the monsoons.

So, it was appropriate that the first time I walked into Curio Spice Co. in Cambridge MA, to meet Claire, was on a drizzly monsoon-like morning, and the aromas that engulfed me in her cosy, spice filled store brought me right back into that courtyard. A warm hug from the cinnamon, cloves and ginger felt like a friend, the vibrancy of the turmeric and chilies reminded me of meals long forgotten, and Claire’s generous curiosity and passion for spices sealed our desire for collaboration.

So you can understand my excitement to announce that Claire and I have worked on developing a garam masala together using my family’s recipe. I am humbled beyond words that we’re bringing what my family has had in their spice box forever, to everyone.

Coming this April, you can buy ‘Fork on a Road’s Garam Masala’ at Curio Spice Co.and at farmers markets around Boston.
